How to configure Internet tel. and SIP settings on Nokia phone (E52)
By Nik On March 28, 2012 · In Google Voice, Mobile VoIP, Open source, SIP protocol, Symbian, VoIP calls quality
In this article we will talk about Nokia Internet telephony and SIP settings since many people asking me about that. I have check all configuration myself on my old Nokia E52 as well as E71 buddy and everything works fine. Therefore you can use the same setup procedure on any E-series with Symbian. Here we go:
1. Download and install SIP Voip Settings Tool for Nokia
This application adds missing VoIP functionality to your E52, you can download it from Nokia site: select “SIP VoIP 3.x Settings (164 kB)” option and press “Download” button. This will download SIP_VoIP_3_x_Settings_v2_0_en.sis file.
Note: Nokia site may require you logged in before allowing the download. If this happens, you can register as a developer using “Join” link (it is free) or you may send me a message if you will have any questions on this.
After you receive .sis file, transfer it to your mobile with e.g. USB cable and run it from File Manager. This will install the application. After the program is installed, reboot (power cycle) your phone, go to Menu > Ctrl.panel and check if “Net Settings” application has been added to the list.
2-A. Create a SIP profile in your Nokia phone (simple way)
Go to Menu > Ctrl.panel, run Net settings application, go to Advanced VoIP settings > Create new service then select Create new SIP profile option.
Username: Your_AccountId#@sipserver.com
Password: Your_Pin_code
Press OK, your SIP profile will be saved as sipserver.com
NOTE: where is a SIP server of your VoIP SIP provider. If you don’t have one – check our posts at this site – we have some reviews and providers comparison as well.
If you want better control over SIP profile settings, use 2b below.
2-B. Create a SIP profile for VoIP calls in Nokia phone (more complicated way, but better control)
Use this method if you want finer control over SIP settings, skip this step if you created your profile with 2a above.
Menu: Ctrl.panel > Settings > Connection > Sip Settings.
Select: Options > New SIP profile > Use default profile
Profile name:
Service Profile: IETF
Default Destination: Internet
Default Access Point: MyNetwork
NOTE: if you define this, you will have to make “MyNetwork” defined as an access point. Leave this setting as “None” to select access point later.
Public user name: Your_AccountId#@sipserver.com
Use Compression: No
Registration: When needed
Use Security: No
Proxy server settings – leave untouched (all fields filled with “None”).
Registrar Server Settings
Registrar server address: sip:sipserver.com
Realm: sipserver.com
User Name: Your_AccountId
Password: Your_Pin_code
Transport Type: UDP
Port: 5060
Press “Back” when done.
3. Activate your SIP profile in Nokia phone
Menu: Ctrl.panel > Net Settings
Select: Options > Advanced VoIP settings > Create new service > You SIP Profile Name
The program will suggest “Activate Profile” – activate it, the mobile will search for available data connections and suggest you to select one. After that it will try to register with our service. When your phone registers, leave Net Settings program and try to make a test call.
4. Making a test VoIP call from your Nokia
Dial 600 and press “Net call” button (right top soft key). After hearing a voice prompt assess sound quality.
NOTE: 600 is a default extension for echo test on Asterisk. Depends on your ISP the test number can be different.
5. Making Internet calls from your Nokia mobile phone
To make an Internet call either dial desired number and press “Net call” button or select a contact from Contacts list, press right navigation key and select “Internet call” option. If Internet call service is not activated yet, follow mobile’s prompts to establish Internet connection and activate the service. Once activated, Internet calls service remains active until you de-activate it.
Note: Do not disconnect active Internet connection without de-activating Internet call service: it will cause your phone to freeze and you will have to power-cycle it
5. Disconnecting Internet calls service in Nokia
To disconnect the service, go to Contacts, press left navigation key, select your SIP profile name from the list, press Options and select “Deactivate service”.
Nokia SIP settings hints:
1. Before placing an Internet call, make sure your Wi-Fi network (or 3G connection) allows UDP traffic through ports 5060 and 49152-65534.
2. When you make a call through your VoIP service provide, destination numbers must start with country code, without leading “+”, “00″ or any other prefixes or interventing characters, for example, to call US number (202)123-4567, just dial: 12021234567.
NOTE: This dial rules and prefixes may vary from provider to provider, so check with your VoIP service provider hoe to make outgoing calls.
3. If sound quality is not good (choppy sound, big delays), launch Net Settings application, go to Advanced VoIP settings > VoIP services, select your SIP profile, go to Codecs, press Options and remove all codecs but PCMU and PCMA: these codecs provide the best quality but require a pretty high bandwidth. For lower bandwidth and lower quality use G729 codec. Removed codecs can be restored later with Add option of Options menu. By default Nokia E52 uses low bitrate iLBC codec which provides so so quality. Codecs technical information could be found at Nokia site (may require developer’s access). Depending on your Internet connection, setting of QoS might also help.
Hope it helps! You may want to check our another article about Nokia SIP settings.
